History

William Shaw started Sky Electric in 1991, as a sole proprietor. Sky’s first project was the renovation of the Bellaire Court House originally built in 1906. It was a 140,000 electrical job and took nine months to complete. In 1992-3 Sky worked on the addition of the Community Reformed Church in Charlevoix, The Dingeman office Building in Traverse City and the addition to the Charlevoix Court House.

In 1993 Sky Electric was organized as a S-corp under the name of William Shaw, Inc. and began to do business as “Sky Electric of Northern Michigan”

Sky Electric of Northern Michigan established itself as a premier industrial and commercial contractor in the 90′s, being involved in some of the biggest and visible projects being built at that time, including The Inn at Bay Harbor, the Marina District in Bay Harbor, multiple million dollar school and municipal projects. In addition Sky kept its roots in the beautiful working man’s town of East Jordan, hiring and training local men and women of Michigan.

In 1997 Sky started and ran a State approved apprenticeship program for electricians that served their company and the local industry and community. It was taught by their pool of Master Electricians and served as a source of skilled labor in the area.

The 2000′s have included projects ranging form industrial challenges at St. Mary’s Cement Plant, schools, Hospitals, Wastewater Treatment plants, Street lighting and Harbor Projects, Office building and always service to the local community.

William Shaw is still the owner and is involved integrally with the operations of the company, however he and Debbi, his wife of 30 years, are investing much of their energies working on bettering the lives of homeless and poor street people in the Philippines. They have started a local Michigan non-profit called Jeepney, Inc., which supports a “Street Paper” in Manila, and organizes the Filipino Homeless World Cup Team. In addition the Jeepney, Inc. is exploring a street paper in Michigan to employ long term unemployed and homeless people in Michigan.
